#5 Ariens Zoom 42 inch Review

Introduction

Don't get the Ariens Zoom confused with the Ariens Max Zoom. The Max Zoom is Ariens top of the line residential zero turn and the Zoom is more of an entry level middle of the road option. The Ariens Zoom is still built with quality in mind. This Zoom 42-inch model is equipped with Kohler's 7000 series V-Twin 20 horse power engine backed by duel EZT hydrostatic transaxles. The C-Channel steel frame offers more strength when compared to other ZTR's in this price range. Low profile frame construction to ensure a lower center of gravity to promote better slope and incline mowing abilities.

For the price the Zoom brings exceptional value to the table. There are several options that come standard that most other comparable ZTR's in this price range offer only at an extra cost. Some of the standard options that make the Ariens Zoom stand out are the foot pedal deck height assist, adjustable sliding seat, 3 way adjustable armrests and trailer hitch for tow behind attachments.

Ariens Zoom 42 inch Bagger zero turn mowerBagger:

The Bagger features a steel frame with 2-bag capacity to collect grassing clippings. This bagger is not powered. Some say the bagger does not work well on this model. This might be due to it's smaller design and lack of a pump assisting clippings into the bags.

Deck

Ariens Zoom 42 Inch Deck zero turn mowerThe 42-inch wide 12 gauge rust resistant stamped steel 3 blade deck features tunnel'd cutting areas to provide good grass clipping discharge with little to no clumping. When cutting very tall grass (12” or higher) you may experience some bogging, clogging or clumping depending on the thickness. Simply take your time and/or make a second pass. If you plan on cutting very tall grass on a regular basis you may want to think about getting a heavier duty zero turn such as Ariens Max Zoom 60-Inch or Toro TimeCutter SS5000 50-Inch.

Cutting height ranges from 1.5” to 4.5” and is adjustable in 7 different heights. The Zoom comes standard with a foot pedal assisted deck lift for easy adjustments. Standard washports for easy under the deck cleaning. Consumers report that overall the mower does a great job well side-discharging or mulching. Arien's does sell a bagger system for the zoom but it is a non-powered version. This has been reported to not work that well for most. Blade engagment I done via an electronic PTO. There are 4 anti-scalp wheels and 3 maintenance free spindles that help plant the mower deck to the ground evenly.

Engine

Ariens Zoom 42 inch Kohler engine zero turn mowerKohler's 7000 series engines provides professional grade features, durability, and power. The KT715 20 horse power 725cc engine is air cooled and highlights user friendly maintenance. All of the servicing points are located in the same convenient to access area. Kohler's 7000 series engines are a perfect match for most any residential zero turn mowers and run smooth and quiet. The pressurized lubrication system and cast iron cylinder walls help pro long the engine's life. The gas tank has a capacity of 2 gallons. Battery and fuses are located underneath the seat.

Transmission

Ariens Zoom 42 inch EZT transmission zero turn mowerThe maintenance free Hydro-Gear EZT hydrostatic transaxle set up is both strong and reliable for most homeowners needs. EZT's are easy to use and are the most common transmissions in cheaper models. Although Ariens recommends the Zoom will work fine on 12 degree slopes the EZT is ideal only for flat terrains. Be careful if you plan to use this mower for hauling as Arien's does not recommend pulling anything over 250lbs. If using a roller do not fill it completely you could easily tear up the EZT transmissions. Ariens Zoom will mow just as well as any other comparable zero turn mowers at this price range, which is exactly what it's designed to do. If you plan on doing a lot of hauling, pulling or mowing on inclines you might want to check out the following zero turn mowers; Ariens Max Zoom, Toro TimeCutter SS5000 or John Deere EZtrak Z235.

Steering

The Ariens Zoom zero turn mowers are designed with traditional handle bar controls as most other zero turns are equipped with. They are fully adjustable with vibration dampers to improve comfort. The handle bar controls have 3 adjustable positions to accommodate all different sized operators. The parking brake is integrated into the control bars and engagement is done when the bars are swung out. First time users may have a bit of a learning curve at first as with any zero turn mower. If you have not used a zero turn before check out our top ten questions about zero turns review for some information. The lower profile platform design allows for a lower center of gravity which improves stability and handling on inclines. As with any traditional zero turn mower there is a bit of a learning curve for any first time operators. Check out the video section to view some how-to's and safety videos.

Comfort

Ariens Zoom 42 inch seat zero turn mower

Ariens has comfort in mind when engineering their zero turn mowers. There is plenty of leg room and the handle bars swing out for easy accessibility to the operators seat. The seat is made of a durable leather with plenty of padding featuring a sliding fully adjustable seat with 3 way adjustable armrests. Since this is smaller mower you make experience more bouncing over the heavier bigger zero turn mowers. Arien's FlexTend Shoulder Supports are a very unique option. This provides maximum comfort. It attaches to the control bars allowing a place for the operators arm to rest. This promotes better posture and reduces muscle fatigue.

Reliability

Ariens delivers plenty of durability with the Zoom zero turn mower. From the C channel steel construction of the frame, 12 gauge steel stamped deck and Kohler engine.
