Ferris Industries is going to expand Munnsville plant after reaching full capacity
The Munnsville plant has grown from 50 to 500 employees over the last few years. Production at the plant has gone with 125 mowers a year to more than twice that produced a day! Ferris Industries has grown alot along with it's peers. Just 30 years after Dave Ferris debuted his first lawn mower, Ferris Industries whos now owned by Briggs & Strattion Power Products Group is undenibly growing and in need of an expansion. The plant in Munnsville produces the Ferris Commerical line of products an dofficials have started investigating the different routes available to fullfill a much needed expansion.
“Our plans are to continue to grow. Currently, we’re looking at any and all operations to increase capacity in the Central New York area,” said Philip Wenzel, vice president of commercial products. “Everyone in the area has worked with us and helped us grow. We’ve earned the right to continue and keep growing.”
Ferris Production Plant Expansion
Company officials say that before any expansion plans start they need to do their homework. They've started reaching out to landowners, contractors and building owners. This has led to local speculation they'll move away from the current site next to the Stockbridhe Valley Central School. Nothing has been officially announced yet. Wenzel stated that any expansion talks a this point are exploratory and they're expected to sort it all out in the next couple of months.
“We plan to have increased production ability in place starting in 2018,” he said. “We’d be hard-pressed to meet customer demands if there is not some sort of change. We need to be able to expand to meet the growing need for products.”
Will Ferris Leave Central New York?
Wenzel was asked how Ferris have thrived in the sometimes rough Central New York State climate and he instantly credited it's 500 employees.
“I have a favorite saying,” Wenzel said. “Products are a reflection of the people who build them. Central New York is a great community of people in which we have been able to acquire a workforce.”
The company’s success “is a testament to people of this area,” he said
Jennifer Loran, marketing and advertising manager added, “pride in craftsmanship resonates with dealers.”
Since manufacturing of lawn mowers has changed drastically over the last decade Ferris’ operations have evolved and expanded. Laser cutting and robotic welders have replaced work once done by people, but only for a more consistent outcome and production timeline. These advances in technology have brought a wider diversity of jobs to Ferris Industries.
