Currently number 10 on our Top Ten Residential Zero Turn Mowers List; The Husqvarna z246i is a brand new model for 2015. The z200 series adds more depth to Husqvarna's already extensive homeowner line of zero turn mowers. Husqvarna has made many improvements such as better ergonomics, refinement, functionality, better deck designs, options and brings along other features that'll simplify and improve the mowing experience. One of the most notable additions to Husqvarna this is it's SmartSwitch™ technology. This is an innovative user interface that offers real-time feedback, key-less security and one-touch starting to name a few. We'll get into more detail later about all these new great features. Although the Husqvarna z246i hasn't been out for very long, it has received great reviews from current owners of the mower. The quality of this machine surpasses the previous number 10 spot holder on our top ten list the Husqvarna RZ4219 which proves the z246 deserves the number 10 spot.
In June of 2006 Husqvarna acquired Dixon, which has been a well known manufacture of Zero Turn Mowers for almost 40 years. Dixon is arguably known as the best residential homeowner zero turn. On August 15th 2014 Husqvarna Professional Products Inc. announced that they will discontinue the Dixon brand in the USA at the end of 2014. Since Husqvarna acquired Dixon their Zero Turn Mowers, Tractors, Walk Behind Mowers and line of Attachments has adopted their great designs and quality to make a super combination of both products into one. Husqvarna also makes some of the Sears Craftsman series Lawn Tractors and Zero Turn Mowers along with MTD. Now that Husqvarna can fully integrate the Dixon line into their own it is easy to see that the new Z200 series offers more features and durability.
Number ten on our Top Ten Residential Zero Turn Mower list the Husqvarna z246i received a 4.1 out of 5.0 rating.

Bagger Collection System
Husqvarna has two bagger systems available for the z246i. One is a two bag 6 bushel capacity bagger and the other is a 3 bag 9 bushel capacity bagger. Current Husqvarana owners do say that the bagger does work well in most conditions. The lift designed blades help lift clippings off the ground and into the chute. The new 2015 models come with a “full bin” indicator light for adding more convenience.
Operator Controlled Discharge Chute
This works wonderful if you have to cut around flower beds, sidewalks and roads to name a few. Simply pull the lever to temporarily close the deck discharge chute. This adds efficiency and helps protect your property while mowing.
There is a mulching kit available with hi lift blades that help make clippings ultra fine. An armrest kit is available to help with comfort and reduce muscle fatigue.
Husqvarna does over a hitch kit for the z246i to pull light duty carts or sweepers. The EZT Transmissions that come on the Z246i are not designed to pull heavy loads much over 250lbs. Pulling heavy loads will tear up the EZT transmissions. If you plan to pull heavy loads look into heavier duty mowers such as the Toro TimeCutter SS4260 or Ariens Zoom 42.

Z246i Mowing Deck
Husqvarna calls their vented spindles “Air Induction Mowing Technology”. This is a fancy term for saying that air is drawn into the deck in a way that promotes grass lift for a superior cut. The Z246i comes with a double blade 46” wide deck made of 13 gauge stamped steel. Around the front and side of the deck, it is reinforced with flat stock steel. This help prolong the life of the mowing deck making it more rigid to withstand blows from rocks, tree stumps and other yard debris. On this brand new z246i Husqvarna now offers a convenient deck lift system with a spring assisted height adjustment hand lever located to the left thigh of the operator. This makes height adjustment much lighter like with using a foot pedal. Height is adjustable in 6 increments from 1.5” to 4”.
Like most other zero turn mowers today the cutting blades are engaged via an electric PTO switch located to the right of the operator on the control panel. Blade tip speed is approximately 16,600 FPM(Feet Per Minute). Three anti scalp wheels help keep the deck from bottoming out while going over bumps or pot holes. There is also a deck washout port which is used to hook up your garden hose to. While the blades are engaged turn on the water and watch all the built up grass come off. The foot platform is held on with a wing nut that allows for easy access to the drive belts.
All new for Husqvarna in 2015 on it's “I” models is the SmartSwitch™ technology. This makes for a convenient one touch key-less starting and security. No more lost keys or complicated starting procedures. This is a great security feature to keep the kids from accidentally starting the mower.
How it Works
-After climbing aboard your mower and the seat sensors sees that you are in position the panel will light up.
-First the Batter charged indicator light will show that the mower is ready to operated.
-Second you will enter a 3 digit security code and then press the start button. The light will turn green to show the code as been accepted now press the start button again and the mower will start up. No more manual choke as it is now electronically built in.
-Now to reset your security code press the start button. When it blinks hold the 1 and 3 buttons for about 3 seconds until the start button stops blinking. Now enter your new 3 digit code. Then press the start button until it turns green again. Now your security code is set.
Z246i Endurance Engine
The 2015 Briggs and Stratton Endurance engine is a 23 horse power 724cc V-Twin engine. This is an Husqvarna exclusively built engine for riding lawn mowers. The main features are electric start, advanced debris filtration and a long-lasting overhead head design. The z246i's engine is well balanced with power and will tackle most homeowners yard tasks.
*All power levels are stated gross horsepower at 3600 rpm per SAE J1940 as rated by Briggs & Stratton.
*All power levels are stated gross torque at 2600 rpm per SAE J1940 as rated by Briggs & Stratton.
Featuring dual Hydro-Gear EZT transmissions the new 2015 z246i is easy to maneuver. But these transmissions are not designed to pull heavy loads much more than 250lbs. The EZT transmissions are maintenance free. These transmissions are generally not good for tackling slopes, but with anything you could develop the skills to use any zero turn on slopes. Remember it is not recommended to use zero turn mowers on slopes more than 15 degrees. The lighter weight of the z246i will make it difficult to maneuver slopes, however you can mow along the slope diagonally. Husqvarna features a lower center of gravity with it's residential zero turn mowers.
Steering the new z246i is a breeze with the EZT transmissions once you learn how to use the control levers. The control levers have easy grip foam and are ergonomically designed. The parking brake is integrated into the control levers and easy to use. When the bars are swung out the parking brake is engaged. When the levers are pulled into operational position the parking brake is disengaged. As with any traditional zero turn mower there is a bit of a learning curve for any first time operators. Check out the video section to view some how-to's and safety videos.
The z246i's control levers are foam gripped and adjustable to help obtain optimal comfort. The 15 inch spring suspended high back seat is adjustable and has optional arm rests sold separately. Arm rests will provide added comfort and help reduce muscle fatigue. Getting on and off is easy with adequate space between the steering console and seat for almost any sized operators. The lightweight design of the z246i may make for a little bit of a bumpy ride. The control panels are easy to reach and use. Also the new 2015 Husqvarna Zero Turn Mowers features vibration damping rubber boots at the frame mounting points.
